Twelve unique and distinguished black men founded Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., at Morgan State College (now University) in Baltimore, MD on September 19, 1963. These men established this fraternity on the key ideals of Scholarship, Leadership, Citizenship, fidelity, and Brotherhood. The motto "Building a Tradition, Not Resting Upon One." is unique for it exemplifies the need for change and individuality.
